Traveling IndependEnce Helping to make travel dreams a reality

About Us

Meet Mark, a military brat who inherited a love for traveling from his upbringing. His wife, Terri, shares the same passion, having lived in multiple places across the United States and Germany. When they first got married, they couldn't afford to travel extensively and settled for quick weekend trips to visit family or explore nearby cities. However, over time, they discovered ways to travel more affordably, including timeshare, vacation clubs, and airline and hotel reward programs. Terri's planning skills also helped them put together incredible itineraries.

Despite their growing travel opportunities, Mark and Terri were still constrained by time, dreaming of longer trips that of a few weeks which they couldn't accommodate with work. The solution they found was entrepreneurship, and now they run their own digital marketing business. Their goal is to help others achieve their travel dreams by providing information on how to plan the perfect vacation on a budget and start their own business. Let Mark and Terri help you make your passion for travel a reality, by finding the time and money to make your dreams come true!

Asheville, NC, a Unique Weekend Getaway

This is one of our favorite cities! Asheville is a mountain city located in the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers a diverse number of things to see and do. Our youngest son and his family lived there for several years, and it makes for a great road trip from many parts of the SE United States. The ride is beautiful and dependent on the time of the year, it can be awesome for a motorcycle trip for all you bike enthusiasts! If you are a foodie, beer buff, wine fan or just love the mountains, this place is great! Things to do include Biltmore Estate, the NC Arboretum with acres of nature trails, Pisgah National Forest for its hiking and camping or take a quick trip to nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A special treat we love is a visit to have a cocktail on the terrace of the Grove Park Inn and enjoy the beautiful view; they also have a spectacular spa! The Grove Park is our favorite hotel in the area due to its closeness to downtown and the River Arts District.

Farm to table is an important part of the food scene in Asheville. If you head to the River Arts District, check out the Bull & the Beggar. This is the restaurant our son worked at and has great farm to table food and craft cocktails. They really know how to roll out the red carpet for all their patrons with the highest quality dining experience. Please make reservations because they are always busy, and I would hate for you to be disappointed. Their approach centers around serving fine cuisine, wines and cocktails in a cozy warehouse style dining room. You can expect attentive service, beautifully plated (remember we first eat with our eyes!) and delicious food. Close by is All Souls Pizza, another personal favorite and not just your run of the mill pizza joint. The restaurant is committed to using fresh, seasonal ingredients, but it mills its own flour and polenta from organic grains, many of which are traditional varieties. The prize isn’t just the interesting toppings but also the crust which is chewy, tangy and bursting flavor. While in the area, visit the Art Studios and the Wedge Brewery for a beer or Pleb Urban Winery.

Speaking of beers, there are more than 30 breweries in the area, establishing Asheville among the leading destinations in America for craft beer and brewing. It consistently ranks in the top three U.S. cities for breweries per capita, while landing on several national lists of the best places to visit for vacations and getaways – and brewery recommendations are almost always included. Asheville was a bit late on the craft beer scene with humble roots in the basement of an Asheville pizza joint. From this underground, came Highland Brewing Company, one of the largest craft brewers in North Carolina. Highland is just one of many craft breweries, if you are a beer fan check out Green Man Brewery, Burial Beer Co., Asheville Brewing Co., Catawba Brewing Co. (2 locations), Thirsty Monk and Pisgah Brewing Co. There are also several nationally recognized breweries that have opened in the area.

If wine is more your style, head over to Biltmore Estate and do a tasting at their winery. While you are there you can tour the grounds and the 250 room Vanderbilt home. A visit to the winery allows you to explore another aspect of the Vanderbilt legacy the Biltmore Wines. There are two ways to enjoy your winery experience, the indoor Tasting Room (complimentary tasting, important if you have never tasted Biltmore wines) and the Wine Bar, where you can order wine by the glass along with some light snacks. There are other experiences to be enjoyed on the estate or in the surrounding Biltmore Village, such as horseback riding, shopping and dining. If you want to stay on the estate for a few nights, check out the Cottages or the Inn directly on the estate or the Biltmore Village Hotel.

Pleb Urban Winery is also in Asheville and worth a visit. The winery produces small batch, craft, low intervention and natural wines using locally sourced grapes. from Western North Carolina. Established in 2018, Pheb Urban is not a vineyard but harvests grapes from multiple local farms to produce our wines. From the vineyard to the taproom, they employ sustainable practices such as not adding sulfites (yeah) and the wine is served from stainless-steel kegs. The winery sits at the south entrance to the River Arts District.

Discover Austin, Texas: A Year-Round Destination

Are you searching for a year-round destination that offers a plethora of unique activities, outdoor adventures, and a warm climate? Consider Austin, the capital of Texas, also known as the "Lone Star State." With approximately 300 days of sunshine each year and an average temperature of 71 degrees in November, Austin is a fantastic destination for those seeking outdoor fun.

From stand-up paddle boarding and music venues to eclectic restaurants and vintage shopping, Austin has it all. However, with so much to do, it can be challenging to decide on activities to try. That's why we recommend checking out the 3-day itinerary at https://www.austintexas.org.

When you think of Austin, you may picture live music, unique bars, and the city's famous "weirdness." But Austin also boasts a wonderful ballet, world-class museums, one-of-a-kind shopping, and beautiful outdoor spaces. You'll find live music everywhere in Austin, from airport terminals and grocery stores to outdoor venues and festivals. If you want to understand the meaning behind "Keep Austin Weird," visit South Congress Ave, which features great live music, restaurants, and shopping. Rainey Street is another unique district for nightlife, where old homes have been converted into bars, hotels, and restaurants.

There are numerous accommodation options and neighborhoods around Austin to consider. If you prefer staying downtown, look for hotels near the Austin Convention Center and Lady Bird Lake, within walking distance of the hottest nightlife, trendy shops, restaurants, music venues, museums, galleries, and scenic outdoor destinations. East Austin is a hot destination for great food, live music venues, art galleries, and boutique shopping. You'll find hotels near the nightlife action on East Cesar Chavez and East Sixth Street, as well as accommodations in Mueller and the convenience of IH-35. If you want to experience Austin's funky neighborhoods, try South Austin. Areas like South Congress and South First showcase Austin's creative side with modern boutiques and eateries. You'll find accommodations within walking distance to the Convention Center, just south of Lady Bird Lake, or towards the Hill Country in Southwest Austin.

Once you're in Austin, there are endless things to do. Take a ride in a hearse and explore the city's dark, spooky side. The tour is seriously keeping Austin weird and allows you and your friends to pile into a hearse that's been converted into a limo or a passenger van wrapped in spooky art. You'll visit historic locations and hear the tales of ghosts that haunt these landmarks. Another popular attraction is the Congress Bridge Bats, where you can watch over a million bats take to the sky at night.

If you're into craft beer or distillery visits, take a guided tour. Austin is home to three celebrated distilleries: Dripping Springs Distilling, Treaty Oaks Distillery, and the Desert Door Distillery. You can also go on a boozy brunch, an Austin tradition, either go for a party bus or a walking tour.

A uniquely Austin activity is visiting the Texas State Capitol. This activity typically takes about an hour. While at the capitol, take some time to stroll the grounds and snap a few photos. If you prefer outdoor activities, zip line while taking in some of Austin's natural beauty with Lake Travis Zip lines. Alternatively, rent a bike or scooter, try paddle boarding, or take a kayaking tour. Another interesting activity is the riverboat on Lady Bird Lake, which focuses on bat watching tours during the warmer months. However, when the bats leave, they offer great sunset, sightseeing, and moonlight cruise tours of Lady Bird Lake.

Gatlinburg, TN, Gateway to the Smokies

If you are looking for something different for your weekend getaway, try Gatlinburg, TN. Gatlinburg is a mountain town known as a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Both Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains are truly year-round destinations, so unless you are worried about driving the mountains in snow, you can head there anytime (snow and colder temps are prevalent in January through mid-March).

Gatlinburg is perfect for a long weekend; three days will allow you to experience most everything. You can do it in two, but you'll feel a little rushed. If you are planning more than 3 days, head over to Pigeon Forge and explore Dollywood and additional things to see and do. The area is breathtakingly beautiful and is often the destination for a weeklong family vacation.

Many of the key attractions offer sweeping views of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including the Space Needle observation tower and the Sky Lift, an aerial cable car that journeys from Downtown to the popular amusement park and ski resort Ober Gatlinburg. There are plenty of things to do in the area including ziplines and whitewater rafting, world-class golf and fishing, and 800 miles of hiking trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, making Gatlinburg one of America's premier outdoor destinations. Biking, bird watching, and horseback riding are great activities to try, while you are communing with nature.

When looking for accommodations, consider renting a cabin for an authentic Smoky Mountain experience. If a cabin is not your thing try a lodge or chalet. With everyone and everything under one roof, you don’t have to miss a thing. Bring the whole family, a group of friends, or escape to a cozy cabin built for two. Throughout the area and in the Gatlinburg proper, you have your choice of luxury or rustic lodging minutes from the mountains and downtown. You can choose to prepare meals in your cabin, pack a picnic or go to the numerous restaurant choices in downtown, but remember, the restaurants and shop close between 9 and 10 pm. For some fun try the Gatlinburg Brewing Company to discover the fresh, handcrafted beers and Unique seasonal releases made right in town. The area is hiking and outdoor sports oriented so pack appropriately, jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, hiking boots and a sweater or light jacket (heavier clothes for winter, but you get the idea). If cabins and lodges aren’t your thing, there are hotels, condos and bed & breakfasts for the whole family. Use this link to find one that is just right for you: https://www.gatlinburg.com/

No trip to Gatlinburg would be complete without a visit to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is one of Terri’s personal favorites and a place she still remembers from her childhood. I personally love driving through the area for the thrill of the steep twists and turns, whatever the reason to visit the Smokies; it is the most visited National Park in the United States. In fact, it's so big, scientists are still discovering some of the plant and animal species found there. The park is home to over 1,500 bears, so be on the lookout when hiking the Smoky Mountain trails, enjoying your campsite or picnic lunch. While seeing a bear is a real thrill, there is plenty of other breathtaking sights in the Smokies, including waterfalls, winding valleys and century-old architecture. You might find cell service a challenge inside the park but don’t worry about it enjoy the experience and take pictures of the beauty to share with friends!

Key West, FL, the American Caribbean

Are you ready for a crazy weekend of sun, fun, and the opportunity to enjoy water sports? If so, let’s head to Florida’s version of the Caribbean, Key West! If you haven’t been to Key West take the Old Town Trolley Tour to get your bearings, it is a guided 12 stop hop-on hop-off tour covers the entire city. There is a plethora of things to see and do on land and sea, so you can stay as busy as you want. We always head to Mallory square to see all the crazy characters, have some conch fritters and watch the sunset. Being there at sunset is an absolute must! While you are there, head to the Key West Custom House near Mallory Square and snap a pic of the latest artwork in front. These works of art by American artist Seward Johnson change periodically.

There are several museums worth the look: Mel Fisher Museum to see what’s lying in the waters off the Florida Keys. Make sure you visit the Hemingway House. Of course, no visit to Key West is complete without a visit to Southernmost Point in the USA, it is a giant red buoy and a must to have your picture taken as you wave to Cuba only 90 miles away.

Make sure you get out on the water! Key West has crystal clear water, and it is warm most of the year. Book a snorkel or dive trip to see the beautiful fish. We love the sandbar trips and the sunset champagne sailing trips; we never miss an opportunity to sail while in the Keys. While the Keys don’t have the type of beaches, we are accustomed to in Florida, you can grab a chair, cocktail and soak up the sun on the Southernmost, Smathers or Higgs Beach. For a special treat book, a day trip to the Dry Tortugas, but book in advance! They sell out quickly. Double check to see if the Tortugas are open, the last I heard they were processing some of the immigrants there.

If you came to Key West for eating, drinking and live music, you are in luck! There are bars to suit every taste and fabulous restaurants! My suggestion is to buy a Daiquiri with a refillable sippy cup LOL! You can get a great discount if you remember to bring your cup. Make sure to hit all the bars on Duval, so you can say you did the Duval Crawl. As for food, there are restaurants in every price range and to satisfy every appetite. We really enjoy Pepe’s for dinner, the food is great and the setting true Key West. Be sure to have key lime pie during your visit. We also enjoy the Half Shell Raw Bar for a cold beer and some fresh oysters. For breakfast and a Bloody Mary head to The Breakfast Club, too.

Try to stay just off Duval in one of the quaint B&B’s. However, there are resorts, motels and Airbnb to suit all budgets and tastes. Rent a golf cart or a scooter to get around town, but look out for the roosters, they are everywhere! Have fun! Remember Key West is an attitude not a destination. Think and sing Margaritaville and you will be ready for your visit!

Stay busy all weekend enjoying the world-class beaches, art deco architecture, pulsating nightlife, authentic Latin culture, entertainment, dining and arts scenes. When you arrive home, you might need a day off to recover!

If you enjoy architecture and history, take a stroll and enjoy the Art Deco Historic District between 5th Street and 23rd Street, along Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue and Washington Avenue. The district, which has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979, contains some 800 designated historic buildings, though some of them represent other modern architectural styles from different eras of Miami’s history. There are walking tours available, check with the Miami Design Preservation League. The tours introduce visitors to Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern (MiMo) styles found in the historic district’s hotels, restaurants and other notable buildings. The League also runs the Art Deco Museum and Welcome Center which educates visitors about the signature design elements of the genre, including symmetry, glass block, neon lighting, curved edges and corners, round porthole windows, terrazzo floors and more. The styles of the 1920s and 1930s and the signature pops of color can be found throughout South Beach.

The Art Deco monikers are prominent in many of the South Beach Hotels. Be sure to visit the outstanding examples of Art Deco buildings along Ocean Ave and try to book your stay in a classic Art Deco hotel, the rooms are often small, but you will be glad you did. The Clevelander South Beach, is always a fun place, known for its party vibe and DJs by the pool. The famous Versace Mansion, now known as Villa Casa Casuarina, is a stately hotel with 10 guest suites. The classic National Hotel is admired for its iconic infinity pool and the famous Delano South Beach, has long been a favorite spot for A-list celebrities. Another way to see the area’s Art Deco design elements is to pick up some souvenirs or enjoy a meal along Lincoln Road. Lincoln Road is fun day or night and is a pedestrian-only 10-block boulevard of shops, restaurants and bars. We always enjoy a stop for pizza and salad at Spris Artisan Pizza or drinks and a hookah at D’Vine Hookah Lounge, make sure you stop for happy hour and try the watermelon hookah. It is a fun place to hang out.

We enjoy heading to Española Way! Española Way is an area in South Beach where you can feel the vibe of the Mediterranean. Originally built to serve as an artists’ colony and modelled after villages in France and Spain, it is a cultural gem still dedicated to art and culinary experiences. The area is home to several restaurants and sidewalk cafes. There are choices from traditional Spanish, Cuban and of course fresh seafood. You can dine al fresco under the stars and enjoy the tropical ambience with creative cocktail and don’t worry most of the restaurants and bars stay open late. One of our favorites is Havana 1957 with delicious Cuban food and craft cocktails.

There are so many options of things to do, make sure you don’t miss out on your beach time. Miami Beach boosts the 24th top beach according to Conde Nast Traveler, but go see for yourself. The water is generally warm and an amazing turquoise like much of the Caribbean and the beach is a dazzlingly white. Make sure you take along your swimsuit and sunscreen. Many of the hotel pools are also great places to hangout, catch some rays and do some serious people watching.

If you feel energetic, rent a bike and ride on the boardwalk along the beach. Before you leave, make sure you do brunch on Sunday morning. There is a plethora of choices for brunch in South Beach, many offer bottomless drinks like Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s. Here are a few of the current favorites. Nikki Beach Miami is one of the most well-known brunches in the beach clubs of South Florida, it is known for its weekend brunch buffet and bottomless mimosas. The Icebox Cafe has been a Miami Beach staple for more than 20 years, a dining destination dedicated to offering diners quality, well-balanced dishes and cocktails. Popular dishes include lemon ricotta pancakes with whipped cream cheese. Limonada Bar + Brunch features an all-day brunch menu and happy hour. Las Olas Cafe is a casual hotspot offering Cuban favorites, including fresh-squeezed juices, legendary Cuban sandwiches & all-day breakfast. The Lido Bayside Grill is a stylish hangout offering creative Mediterranean food and drinks on a bayside deck at The Standard. Yardbird Table & Bar is a southern menu with artisanal drinks featuring chicken and waffles, plus craft cocktails.

For a break from the pulsating music and the trendy restaurants checkout Puerto Sagua. Located on Collins Avenue, it still maintains its old-school diner charm (it’s been around since 1962). Typically, it’s packed with people from tourists eating Cuban sandwiches to locals stopping by for a quick bite. The menu is huge, and has plenty of Cuban classics like croquetas, masitas de puerco, and whole fried snapper.

New York, NY, the City that Never Sleeps

Spending a weekend in the Big Apple is amazing, there is so much to see and do! As a native New Yorker (Long Island), I rarely visited the city to see the sights, it was Terri who spent time in NYC who knew all the best restaurants, bars and places to go, so this week, this is really her article. When we started traveling to the Big Apple as a couple, it was fun to explore and find great hidden gems.

For most New York conjures all kinds of images, it is one of the most recognizable cities in the world with a variety of things to do, so much so that you will never do everything you want to in a quick weekend. So, unless you think of staying longer, take in a particular area or do something that is meaningful to you. Remember, New York is not just one city but five boroughs and numerous neighborhoods, each one with its own personality and things to see and do. Typically, when we say New York City, we think of Manhattan. For this article, that is what we will be covering. Choose your hotel, by what you want to see and do. Keep in mind, hotels will be expensive in Manhattan, so if you have status with any of the hotel groups, check them out first. Airbnb could be a good choice if you are looking to save money. Here are a few suggestions by location. We like Midtown or the Upper East Side and have stayed in a wide variety of accommodations.

  • The Lowell, 5-star off Madison Ave
  • The Carlyle, 5-star Art Deco on the Upper East Side
  • The High Line Hotel, 3-star with a taste in old New York in Chelsea
  • The Ritz Carlton, 5-star near Central Park
  • The Evelyn, 4-star at Madison Square Park an Art Deco great for couples
  • The Chatwal, 5-star in Midtown steps away from the theater districtThe Andaz, 4-star by Hyatt across from the New York Public Library
  • The Moxy NYC Chelsea, 3 -star by Marriott in the Flower District (there are several locations of The Moxy around the city)

A good start is put on some comfortable shoes and get out on the streets and walk. It may seem strange considering its size, but NYC is a walking city and truly the only real way to experience the city. Simply strolling the streets provides an excellent opportunity to take in the sights, sounds and tastes of the city. You can visit the ancient Jewish delis of the Upper West Side, the meandering cobblestone lanes of Greenwich Village, the stores of 5th Avenue and don’t forget the graceful paths and trails of Central Park. While you are out and about, try the food: bagels & lox, dirty water dogs, pizza and Manhattan clam chowder. There are plenty of things to experience while walking and you will get the lay of the land. In recent years, the High Line, the city’s popular elevated park was built along a disused railway line, making Manhattan even more of a joy for pedestrians.

If you don’t want to make a return trip on foot, experience the subway or a NY taxi ride. If mobility is an issue or you just don’t like to walk, try the hop on & off buses touring the city, these will take you all around the city pointing out important landmarks and allowing you time to get off and explore on your own before resuming your tour. Check for the multiple day tickets if you are there for a long weekend. After a walking adventure take in a unique New York treat of catching a star-studded Broadway show (check the shows and times in advance, but you can get some great deals on same day tickets on some shows).

They say that you could eat at a different restaurant every night of your life in New York City and not exhaust the possibilities. Considering there are an estimated 25,000 restaurants across the five boroughs and more opening all the time that is an understatement. The Big Apple is a world capital for food and drink, and your options here are nearly limitless. If you find the number of choices intimidating, head to the West Village — a quaint downtown neighborhood with some of the city’s most relaxed bistros, taverns and trattorias. Another great option is Little Italy in Lower Manhattan which boosts incredible family-run Italian restaurants. There are city food guides available all over the city and of course the concierge can point you in the right direction.

Of course with multiple days, you will want to take in some of the NYC icons like the Statue of Liberty with regular ferry rides to Liberty Island stopping at Ellis Island, where you can explore the captivating National Museum of Immigration (please check conditions and availability for both at nps.gov before visiting. NYC is home to a magnificent assortment of world-class museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History*, the Guggenheim*, MoMA (Museum of Modern Art*) and the Whitney Museum of American Art. It is worth it to plan a visit to at least one of these while there. Another visit worth the time is the top of the Empire State Building, the view is amazing.

Savannah, GA, a Southern Favorite

One of our favorite cities in the south is Savannah, GA. Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia and still has all its southern charm. It is beautiful with historic homes and cemeteries, a lively riverwalk and plenty of restaurants and bars to make your weekend complete. Voted one of the friendliest cities in the US by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler, Savannah has a plethora of things to do.

If you're a fan of history, architecture, and great food, then Savannah, GA is definitely a city you won't want to miss. As one of the oldest city in the south, it has plenty of stories to tell and a wealth of southern charm to go with it. The city boasts a vibrant waterfront along River St, historic tree lined streets with excellent examples of colonial architecture and first-rate restaurants and hotels, making Savannah the perfect romantic weekend getaway. There are spectacular restaurants, craft cocktails, rooftop bars, not to mention romantic carriage rides on cobblestone streets lined with live oak trees and hanging moss.

There are plenty of cultural activities and experiences. Explore the historic sites such as Juliette Gorgon Lowe's (Girl Scout founder) home, Forsyth Park, Bonaventure Cemetery, Davenport House and/or PinPoint Heritage Museum. Use the trolley to get around and gain some additional insight on the city. Don't forget Savannah is considered one of the most haunted cities in the US, so be sure to take a ghost tour. For a change of pace, visit Fort Pulaski or for some beach time, pack a picnic lunch and head over to Tybee Island for the day.

Savannah's River St is a great place to start, where you can stroll along the waterfront and enjoy the views of the Savannah River. Along the riverfront you will find a plethora of shopping, restaurants and bars. A must do is visiting Savannah's Candy Kitchen and Riverfront Sweets. There is even an old riverboat available for a cruise along the river with brunch, lunch or dinner. We also enjoy staying along the river, check out River Street Inn and the Olde Harbour Inn. There are also major brands like the Marriott, Hyatt and Westin and a new JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District Hotel which boosts a rooftop bar. Be sure to take a leisurely stroll along tree-lined streets, which are perfect for a romantic carriage and take in some of the impressive colonial architecture while you're at it.

When it comes to dining, Savannah has something for everyone. From award-winning restaurants like The Gray and Husk to rooftop bars and speakeasies, there's no shortage of great food and drinks to enjoy. And if you're looking for a true southern tradition, be sure to try chicken and waffles at brunch. Check out some of the popular and award-winning restaurants like, the Olde Pink House (book early), Vics on the River, The Gray (James Beard award winner) and one of our favorite's Husk. Cocktails are not problem either, we always enjoy the speakeasy inside the Prohibition Museum.

But Savannah isn't just about food and drinks. There are plenty of cultural activities and experiences to enjoy as well. Take a ghost tour to learn about the city's haunted past, visit historic sites like Juliette Gorgon Lowe's home or the Bonaventure Cemetery, and explore the PinPoint Heritage Museum. And if you're looking to get outside, Fort Pulaski and Tybee Island are great options for outdoor adventures. Tybee Island is a scenic beach community just minutes outside of Savannah and offers get places for a family beach day or a waterfront dining experience featuring fresh seafood.

Weekend Cruise: Explore the Best Destinations in 3-4 Days

Do you feel the allure of the open sea, with the wind in your hair and a cold drink in your hand? Consider taking a weekend cruise to get away from work demands or budget constraints. Here are some of the best destinations for a weekend cruise:

  • Nassau, Bahamas
  • Ensenada, Mexico
  • Key West, Florida

Let's take a closer look at Nassau, Bahamas, which is one of the most popular Caribbean cruise ports for good reason. The port offers a plethora of activities and sights, and most cruise lines allow a longer visit. Take in the natural beauty and unique culture of Nassau while shopping in duty-free boutiques and bargaining in the straw market. Tour a rum distillery, taste delicious seafood creations, or indulge in rum cake. Relax on one of Nassau’s many beaches, climb the historic Queen’s Staircase, or take a snorkeling or diving trip. If you have extra time, visit Exuma Cays and swim with the famous Bahamian pigs! Many cruise lines have a private island in the Bahamas equipped with all types of water-sports and often a zip-line. Carnival has been going to Bimini on some of their weekend trips. Arrange for a golf cart and take a tour around the island. Don't forget to stop at one of the many beachside bars for a refreshment and some conch.

Ensenada, a popular Mexican Riviera cruise port, is a cultural and wildlife hub, with museums to tempt history buffs and migrating gray whales to charm animal lovers. Enjoy the harbor area with its stands of local arts and crafts, tacos, and coffee. Sample the local cuisine, including ceviche. Tour the Bodegas de Santo Tomas, Baja’s oldest winery, only a short ten to fifteen-minute walk from the harbor. Santo Tomas is one of the oldest wineries in Mexico, having been founded in 1880 when wine had previously only typically been produced by churches. After your tour, enjoy a tasting that includes a few of their different wines with generous pours. They also produce their own olive oil and chocolate which you can also sample. Many of the workers at the winery speak English and are able to provide detailed information about the wines, making this a great experience for wine enthusiasts! Afterwards trek to see the photogenic La Bufadora, an underwater cave that regularly spritzes Ensenada’s rocky coast with seawater (watch out if you don’t want to get wet).

Finally, we featured Key West as a weekend getaway. If you are looking for more information on what to see and do, check out our blog on Key West. This picturesque, pastel paradise is popular with photographers and shoppers who are drawn to the promenades of Mallory Square and the colorful Duval Street. Visit the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, explore Dry Tortugas National Park, or have your picture taken in front of the colorful buoy representing the Southernmost Point of the mainland USA. (see our blog on Key West for more things to do)

Remember to check for specials on these cruises. Sometimes, incredible offers are available on last-minute bookings, so there is no need to book in advance.

Getting the Most From Your Travel Budget

Step 1: Prepare & Research

Planning a vacation can be exciting, but it's important to be thorough in your research to ensure you stay within budget. Consider what you want to accomplish on your trip - adventure, sightseeing, exotic destinations, romance, or rest and relaxation. This will help you identify the right destination. Research all potential locations, including their associated costs, to get a good understanding of what each has to offer. Determine your budget and factor in the cost of airfare, accommodations, and other expenses. Choose the location that best fits your goals and budget. Once you have made your choice, purchase a travel guide to discover more details about the location and bring your guide with you on your trip. Remember, thorough research is key to planning a successful trip that won't break the bank.

Step 2: Do Your Own Booking

If you want to make the most of your travel budget, consider booking your own trip. Doing so can help you find incredible ways to save! Start by joining credit card, airline and hotel loyalty programs to earn and use points. Consider traveling during shoulder season instead of high season. Determine what you really need in terms of accommodations, and consider traveler reviews instead of star ratings. If you are staying with family or friends, consider a timeshare or renting a condo or house to save money and cook some meals. Book airfare early, travel midweek, and avoid late flights. Consider traveling overnight on longer trips to avoid additional hotel stays. Try not to check bags when possible. Use mass transit to save additional money. Purchase travel and car insurance to avoid additional charges and travel headaches.

Step 3: When You Arrive

Researching and purchasing a travel guide is a great way to familiarize yourself with the area before you arrive. Upon arrival, asking locals for their recommendations on places to visit and things to do is a great way to get the inside scoop. Don't forget to look up festivals and free events beforehand, so you can make the most of your trip. Consider taking a walking tour with a local guide to truly immerse yourself in the culture. Connecting with other travelers can be done through welcome parties, bars, and lounges. We've met some of our lifelong friends by doing just that. Be aware of any cultural customs such as haggling or negotiating prices, as this can help you stay within your budget. Bring local currency, exchange money for small bills, and use ATMs in well-lit areas with reasonable fees. If you don't have an international phone plan, consider purchasing a local SIM card and take advantage of free Wi-Fi. Finally, be sure to tip for excellent service, it's a great way to build relationships with the locals and make your trip more enjoyable.

Step 4: After You Return Home

Based on personal experience, it is critical to check your room and safe to ensure that you haven't left anything behind, particularly important items like passports, jewelry, money, phones, tablets, and computers. These items are not easily replaceable, making it crucial to double-check. Once you return home, there are important things you should do, such as keeping all receipts and comparing expenses against your budget. If you spent more than expected, take note of which areas were higher and make changes accordingly. Additionally, review your credit card and bank statements for the last six months to verify that charges are accurate and nothing seems unusual. Don't forget to share your vacation experience with family and friends by posting pictures on social media or writing in a journal to document your journey.

Dealing with Travel Delays & Cancellations

Being prepared for travel delays is crucial, especially during peak holiday periods. Having a plan in place can make a big difference in your travel experience. Here are some tips to prepare for travel delays:

  • Have a backup plan for flights and be prepared to find alternative options.
  • Consider potential alternative travel methods like rental cars and trains, and make sure you have a plan to and from your destination if necessary.
  • If you can work remotely, bring your laptop and necessary accessories to work if delayed.
  • Avoid traveling on weekends and peak holiday periods. Try traveling on Tuesday and Wednesday or on the holiday, when flights are less full and fares are more reasonable.
  • Consider smaller regional airports to avoid travel nightmares.
  • Fly earlier in the morning to have more opportunities to rebook if necessary.
  • Try to avoid checking bags, and allow yourself plenty of time for parking and checking bags (when necessary).
  • Sign up for flight information via text and make sure your phone is charged.
  • Be kind and polite to airline personnel and consider finding your own options for rebooking.
  • Know where there are hotels near the airport with shuttles and always travel with money to cover unexpected expenses.
  • Purchase trip cancellation & interruption insurance to cover unexpected expenses and missing bags.
